One corner of our bedroom has been deemed the packing zone and I have 4 suitcases and two carry on bags spread out and collecting miscellaneous items for our trip. As I think of something that we need to take I just throw it in this general direction.
The yellow notes on the wall are my Type A side coming out. Each suitcase is labeled w/ what it is for:
1- Kids clothes and toys for our hotel stay
2 – Our clothes; kids backpacks for airplane (w/ goodies to be reserved for flight)
3 – Donations
4 – Donations
Carry On 1 – Cameras and clothes and toiletries for our overnight in Washington D.C. on the way (so that hopefully we only need to open one bag). Including gloves, scarf and hat because it is going to be COLD!!!!
Carry On 2 – Couple changes of clothes for each of us in case our luggage is lost or delayed, maybe extra reading material
I have to say that my best packing tip is the wonderful SpaceSaver bags (you know – As Seen on TV). I have several that I use in our linen closet to store blankets and pillows. One of the things we have been trying to purchase for Hope for the Hopeless is a little warmer jackets as it will be colder on their new property. Mark and I have been hitting the thrift stores on dollar day when certain color tags are just 99 cents each. Last week I cleaned out the yellow tagged jackets and scored about 10 items. But space is limited and jackets are bulky. So I headed to Linens ‘N Things (which is going out of business so everything is 30% off) and scored 5 more space bags for $12.
I can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure that I stuffed about 10-12 jackets, a dozen socks and 10 winter hats or so in this bag before I sucked all the air out w/ the vacuum cleaner. When I was done, it was only about 4 inches thick.
So far one donation suitcase is full and the kids suitcase is all packed. I’m filling up the holes w/ granola bars and snacks – some for us, some to hand out while we’re walking around.
Having an extra week to pack is nice but my hope is to get it all done (except for last minute toiletries) by Thursday night so we aren’t rushing at the last minute.
