A year ago I wrote this post about how sad I was to learn that we had “missed” Beza turning 7. (Hadn’t even known when her birthday was at the time.)
Well this year we got to celebrate her birthday as a new family and watch her turn from 7 to 8 today. We have officially been home 2 weeks and I have “known” her for almost 3. It has been fun to get to know this sweet girl. It is very different from watching your birth child’s personality emerge slowly as they grow. Here she is, this girl with some many traits already fully developed, and it is up to us to discover them.
One of my favorite things about her is her facial expressions. In the very first video we saw of them, when the interviewer asked her if she like to play football, she gave him this crazy “heck no” smile and jerk of her head. It always made me laugh. Well, the expressions keep coming. She can raise one eyebrow and give this funny little smirk that cracks me up. She and Wendemagegn taught us a card game that we have played several times and I get such a kick out of watching her face while she’s playing. I will have to video it one of these days so you all can see.
She loves to jump on the trampoline and it seems she likes to sing too although she does it quietly. She is the first to get the humor in a funny movie and I love to hear her giggling.
She is now giving us enthusiastic hugs (instead of just the leaning “I’ll let you hug me” thing). The other day dad did school while I birthday shopped and when I came home she ran into the room and said “Mom!” and gave me a hug. Melted this mom’s heart, that’s for sure.

We had a great celebration tonight with the grandparents (except my mom who is still in the care center). She got to eat real, authenic, not-cooked-by-mom injera which MeeMaw picked up at the Ethiopian market. And boy did she love her cake as evidenced by the pictures above. She had two pieces and had blue frosting all over her face.
