My first clothing crisis

11.20.2010 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

I’m having my first true clothing crisis of our 12 month no-shopping challenge.

Black boots.

For the last 5 years I have had this fantastic pair of casual black ankle boots. I had bought them from a charity shop in England for something like $8 and I LOVED them. That pair plus a pair of brown ankle boots are pretty much my winter footwear wardrobe. Just like flip flops get me through March-October.

But last winter that beloved pair of boots literally broke in half and I had to throw them away.

This week it has finally gotten cool enough that flip flops really don’t work – feet get too cold.

But I have no black boots.

And you can’t wear brown boots with black – everyone knows this.

I think this calls for an emergency purchase but Mark is not so sure. I even told him I would get rid of two pairs of shoes in exchange.

What do you think?

I think that if you exchange 2 pairs for the purchase of your new boots….it’s fair and comes out in the wash. But I’m also working on my impulsive buying…good luck

A very stylish friend of mine told me that brown boots with black works well. The trick is to add some brown to other parts of your outfit. A brown scarf, a necklace of chunky brown beads, a brown belt. Any of those things will work.

    Good luck!

I’m with Mary — as much as I’d love to give you a big fat endorsement to go get some, I just keep coming back to — “You’ve come this far! Don’t give in now!” How much longer do you have? And do you have any friends who can let you borrow them just til this gig is up? What size are you? I’d be willing to send you my sweet “new” (ie yardsale, but they’re FAB) black boots to help the cause….let me know…. YOU CAN DO IT JULES!!! 🙂

Ooh, tough call, Julie! I’m thinking that I could probably survive a season without boots, but we have different styles. So, I don’t know if I can say that it really constitutes an emergency, but your offer to get rid of two pairs of shoes also sounds fair.

I’m sure you’re not talking about going out & spending $100 on them, either. Maybe if you could get them for a certain price? Like the same price you paid for the broken ones? That would be a challenge, but perhaps it’s time to get creative!

Suck it up Imelda! You have OTHER shoes, right? Just think of the kids in Haiti that don’t have ANY shoes.

I agree with Mary…I was shopping at Loft and the sales lady said I can definately where black and brown together. I looked at her strange at first. (O:

And I remember hearing somewhere…black goes with everything, brown goes with everything, it only makes sense that they go with each other!

Maybe you need black boots for Christmas?

What size do you wear? I’ve got a pair of black nine West boots. They are taller than ankle boots but not quite long boots. I found them at Goodwill and only paid $8 for them and they are in excellent shape. They are size 9 and they are yours if you want them.

I agree that you can wear the brown with black, and that you’ve come so far you shouldn’t buy any. BUT…you have at least 3 offers here for people to GIVE you boots! You should definitely take them up on it and that definitely shouldn’t count as breaking any rules (Mark). 🙂
