Adoption Fundraiser Spotlight – The Smith Family

08.30.2013 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

Fundraiser-Spotlight-Smith

Each Friday I’ll feature a different fundraising adoptive family. My hope is that we can support each other and also learn from each other. For submission guidelines, go here.

We are the Smith Family.  Our names are Micah and Sheila and we have 3 bio children, ages 11, 8, and 6 and are newly home (Feb 2013)  with our 7 year old Brenda.  Last year, we sat in on a Patch Our Planet conference and God whispered into our ear that He had big plans for our family.  One night, we were looking through waiting children photos and we saw a picture of our sweet Brenda and we knew she was our child.

Smith-FamilyFast forward 7 months later and we are in the process of bringing Brenda’s 10 year old brother home. We started praying for him while we were in Uganda and we realized that God wanted us to keep Brenda’s family intact. So this past July we stepped out in faith AGAIN and have started the process to bring Brenda’s brother home.

It’s been a beans and rice year for us.  We have sold items laying around in the garage.  We have sold magazine beads, held babysitting fundraisers, sold Yankee candles, and prayed A LOT.  Currently we are holding an online Facebook silent auction which is set to go live Sep 21-28, 2013. The link is here:  https://www.facebook.com/SmithFamilyAdoption

We are hoping to travel before Christmas and we are praying this auction will help cover most of our travel costs.  If we don’t need “need” it, we don’t buy it.  Adoption is possible but you have to be creative and very thrifty if you want to do adopt debt free.

Financial Freedom

Taking Advantage of The Housing Boom

The next huge step in our financial journey really came in 2004 when the housing market in Phoenix went absolutely crazy. The house that we bought for $199,900 over a year earlier was suddenly worth about $350,000. Crazy right? So of course Mark starts talking about selling and I start rolling my eyes at him. […]

I Met Dave!

We interrupt our normally scheduled post for this breaking news… I met Dave! Yesterday I got the opportunity to volunteer at the Dave Ramsey Live Event in Phoenix. It was this same event 10 years ago that changed our lives. Before the show Dave came around and greeted every one of the 60 or so […]
