Dishwasher chore genius

06.05.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

I’ve said it before – we have a very loose chore system in the Gumm house. Mom asks you to do it, you do it.

But loading and unloading the dishwasher has become a little hard to keep track of.

So after a few complaints of “I did it the last three times” I came up with this genius system. Just printed their names on cardstock, laminated it and stuck a magnet on the back.

Whoever is at the top gets called (whether it’s loading or unloading) and when they’re done they move their magnet to the bottom. (Illegal moving of your magnet means sole dishwasher duty for a week.)

So far it’s working great.

Review & Giveaway: “Love, Charleston” by Beth Webb Hart

06.03.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

Since getting my ipad a year ago I rarely read a “real” book but this afternoon I grabbed “Love, Charleston” by Beth Webb Hart off the bookshelf.

Set in Charleston, South Carolina Hart beings with the tale of Roy, the widower priest who is called to pastor a church in Charleston – a place he doesn’t feel he fits in.

In Charleston lives Anne Brumley, a single bell-ringer; her sister Lish who seems to have the perfect life; and her cousin Della who is unhappy in her financially struggling marriage.

Of course you know that Anne is going to end up with Roy but their romance isn’t the crux of the story. The truly touching part of this book is the way Della and Anne sacrifice to help Lish when she succumbs to a severe depression after the birth of her third child.

While her husband refuses to admit the severity of his wife’s illness, Della and Anne step in to take care of the baby and other two children and try to get Lish the help she needs. Unfortunately her husband stands in their way for far too long and it is only when he moves to Atlanta to accept a new job that the women are able to get Lish on the road to recovery.

In the end Roy finds romance with Ann; Della realizes that the financially secure life she thinks she wants is not what’s important and Lish learns to keep perserving through the difficulty time.

I enjoyed the book. I’ll admit to skimming over all the historical facts about St. Michael’s church but otherwise it was a good read – one I finished in an afternoon.

Since I’m all for passing on books when done, I’m giving my copy away. Leave a comment below and I’ll select a winner at random Monday at midnight.

Patience pays…again

06.02.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

My husband has been blessed with the gift of bargain-finding.

Example #1
Our main TV died (huge old tube-style). After lots of research and shopping he found a 42″ 3D Plasma flat screen. Original price? $899. On clearance for $399. As if that wasn’t good enough, he took the two pairs of 3-D glasses that came with the television and sold them on ebay for $120. Final cost $280. (We didn’t really care about the 3-D feature and the kids can wear those paper glasses right 🙂

Example #2
While shopping for above TV (on date-night I might add) I said sweetly “When our DVD player dies, I’d really like to get a Blu-Ray player honey.” He found a $79 3-D Blu-Ray player that came with a bonus Blu-Ray DVD of the Director’s Cut Edition of “AVATAR”. Sold that on ebay for $74. Final price? $5 (Actually he bought two and sold the second DVD and player for a profit of $80.)

I put him to the test once again when, during my chair reupholstering adventures, I rather forcefully said “I want a NEW sewing machine!”

“I see them all the time at thrift stores,” he said. Which made me kind of glare at him, I’ll admit. At that moment I was not in the mood to be patient and wait for his hunting to pay off again.

But I had my mom’s machine so I was okay. I spent a bit of time doing some research. I don’t need anything super complicated but the one I had (WHICH he bought for $20 at a pawn shop 19 years ago) did a basic stitch and a zig-zag – that’s IT.

Yesterday he was out running errands (that’s code for bouncing from thrift store to thrift store) when he called me and told me to get on the computer and look up a certain sewing machine. Actually TWO sewing machines. Both were even better than I really needed.

Price? $9.99 each.

They are both selling used for $110-120 on eBay. So I had him buy both. After I try them out I’ll keep one and then the other is going to my friend Stace who’s been wanting one too.

He gets the Hero of the Week award…again.
