Help Project HOPEFUL win a new Toyota!

06.11.2011 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

I’ve been bugging people for a week now to vote for my blog.

But TODAY I want, no NEED, you to vote for one other thing.

Project HOPEFUL, an amazing organization we are involved with, is in the running for a new Toyota in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program. Each day for 100 days Toyota is giving away a new Toyota Sienna to a non-profit organization (entries were narrowed down to the 100 earlier).

So today it is between Project HOPEFUL and 4 other organizations and I NEED you to vote. And then post it on your Facebook.

First, you’ll need a Facebook account to vote.

Go here and click VOTE TODAY.

Voting opens at 6 AM easter time and goes until midnight. You can only vote once per Facebook account, so I am encouraging hacking your spouses FB account if necessary.

Project HOPEFUL helps encourage, enable and equip families to adopt kids with HIV. They are working really hard to educate people on the TRUTH about HIV and the AIDS virus. One of the ways they do that is through educational workshops for parents considering adoption. Right now they do them in just a couple of states but the new van would help them be able to travel and take the workshops to more states.

Almost all of the families who attend these workshops end up adopting HIV+ children and giving them forever homes. I can’t think of a more worthy cause!

Can Christian adoption culture be a clique?

05.27.2011 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

During one of the breakout times at CAFO Summit 7 I ended up in the “Post Adoption Depression” session because the one on sibling transition (which I think should have been called “How to help your adopted & bio kids NOT hate each other”) was canceled.

Of course, I’ve had my own lovely journey through PAD, but I was curious what the speaker would say and if I would learn anything new. It was a good session but not anything earth shattering.

Until one of the attendees commented that here, at this gathering of 1,500+ orphan/adoption advocates, she felt left out because they were adopting because of infertility, not to “save” a child. (I’m paraphrasing here, but that was the gist of it.)

I quickly realized, that although it made me cringe, I could TOTALLY see that!

(The subject of adopting to “save a child” is a whole other post worth some discussion.)

It’s easy, especially in the international adoption field, to look at a child’s current situation and see how much better they will be when they are in a family. Adopting them will dramatically alter their lives, sometimes literally saving it.

We see these huge families that have adopted 8, 9, 10 or more orphans and we focus on the benefits to the children.

And all of that is GOOD!

Unless those of us who have both bio and adopted children, those who had a choice, are somehow making the infertile couple feel like their motives are any less pure.

Unless we’re saying to her, “Well your adopting because it’s what YOU want, not because a child needs you.”

Because her motives are not any less right. They are not any less valid.

God created us to parent. He created women to want to nurture and protect a child. He gave her that desire!

And instead of giving up, she is choosing life. Like us, her adoption process will be difficult and expensive. But on top of that, she is dealing with the loss of her own dreams. She will never carry a child in her belly. She will never experience the wonder of childbirth.

What are we doing to help her heal from her loss?

If 10 minutes = $15,000

05.26.2011 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

So what if I told you 10 minutes of your time could equal almost $15,000.

Oh wait, not for you…sorry…it’s even better.

$15,000 to help farmers in rural africa increase their crops by 1,000% (Which means rising out of poverty, sending their kids to school…..)

You don’t have to give a dime (but you can), just 10 minutes.

The Gates Foundation (yes, THAT Gates) is issued a challenge to help discover innovate ways to help rural farmers and show their importance.

Well, remember my friends over at The AdVenture Project (the ones who had the awesome World Water Day challenge you helped with). Well it just so happens that their project this quarter is about rural farmers!! The had launched it a few weeks prior but they came up with something even more fun.

The One to 1,000 challenge is designed to help them spread the word about Kickstart Irrigation Pumps. They have 10 days (well 7 days are left) to get 1,000 people to create an about.me profile and use it to highlight their project.

If they reach their goal of 1,000 people, sponsors will donate almost $15,000 to the project. (Each pump costs $60 so that’s 250 farmers that would be helped.) You can help them stretch that by “placing a bet” and agreeing to donate any dollar amount if they reach the 1,000 goal.

Setting up an about.me page is super easy and they’ve got all the info HERE, including pictures you can use, etc.

So, 10 minutes? Pretty please? (If you’re really ambitious make one for your spouse too 🙂

(Be sure to go back to the campaign page and register your about.me page when you’re done.)
