Plastic Surgery Reduces Holiday Stress – Guest post by Marsha Harwood

09.14.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

The holidays are just around the corner. This can be the most glorious or the most stressful time of the year. Extra demands on our time, emotions, and resources can stretch you beyond your limits.

And that’s why you need plastic surgery to help reduce your holiday stress level.

A nip here, a tuck there, a quick cut and I promise you, your husband will be saying you need to do this more often. By making nip, tuck and cut a part of your monthly routine, you will no longer be plagued by all that excess that follows you around all year long.

You know what I’m talking about, the shopping rush that put a smile on your face actually caused your chin to double in size when your jaw dropped, but not from laughter. And look at your eyes, bulging after viewing the credit card bills that roll in come January. By June, you’ve barely put a dent in your Christmas debt. Now your laugh lines are stress fractures that can seriously damage your marriage. Fall rolls around and the ghost of Christmas past still haunts you like cellulite.

Girlfriends, all this won’t go away by itself. It’s time for plastic surgery.

A Nip Here

  1. Nip excessive spending by making a budget and then sticking to it. We don’t plan to have financial failures this time of the year, we just fail to plan. Christmas is on December 25th every year. Why are we surprised when it arrives, and we’re not prepared?
  2. If you are just now starting your shopping and you haven’t been putting money aside each month towards gifts, then make a list of all the essentials that must be paid out of your income between now and Christmas. The essentials would be what Dave Ramsey calls “The Four Walls” – food, utilities, shelter and transportation. Next list what bills are due and your charitable giving. Whatever’s left is what you have to spend on Christmas. Here’s how to create a budget online in 60 seconds.
  3. Another tip to nip excessive spending: Create a list of each person you’re buying for and a dollar limit by their name.
  4. Nip the notion that bigger and more is better. Our children and grandchildren won’t be damaged for life if we don’t get them everything they want. If you must have a gift for everyone, consider simple, even homemade items, or gift certificates of time or service. Exchanging names with extended family and friends is also a convenient way to stay within your budget.
  5. Before you run out to shop, do some research. Check ads and online for the best deals and only shop there. Purchasing as much as you can online, using your debit card, will actually reduce impulse purchases. No more temptation to buy something on a whim because it looked pretty in the store.

A Tuck There

  1. If you do hit the malls, you’ll spend less if you tuck cash into your wallet. When the cash is gone, you’re done shopping.
  2. Tuck your debit card safely away in your wallet, and commit not to use it. They’re convenient, but you’ll be more inclined to go over budget when using your debit card. It’s hard to keep track of how much you’re spending during a shopping trip when you can’t visually see the funds dwindling away.
  3. Keep a copy of your Christmas list tucked away in your wallet as well as at home. This will be helpful as a quick reference when shopping.

A Quick Cut

  1. Ultimately, the best way to reduce holiday stress is plastic surgery; cut those credit cards in half and run them through a shredder! This seems extreme, but it works. Proverbs 22:7 says, “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” Do you want to be anyone’s servant other than the Lord?
  2. Don’t get sucked in by the “We’ll give you 10% off your purchase today if you’ll get our charge card” trap. Politely cut the clerk off and say, “No thank you.”

This type of plastic surgery will bring peace, harmony and oneness to your marriage, not only during the holidays, but year round.

The Back to School Party

08.10.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

I don’t mean the “meet the teacher” kind.

I mean the party that I’m having next Wednesday at approximately 8:20 when I arrive home to a QUIET house.

I’m going to yell “Woohoo!” and do a little happy dance. And probably eat dessert for lunch just because I can.

Don’t get me wrong. I loved summer – the more relaxed schedule, doing fun stuff with the kids. But let’s face it, my productivity tanks, BIG TIME. At least any tasks that require creativity and brain focus.

For example, I’m supposed to be revising my book and adding approximately 15,000 words in an attempt to get a traditional publisher to pick it up. My goal was to have it done by mid August.

Um, I’ve added 1,786 words to date.

I have a speaking engagement in 10 days and while I have a rough outline, it’s been hard to get down to the details.

I used to feel guilty that I was so happy when the kids went back to school.

But I’m over it.

As my husband would say  “5 days and a sleep”…..

Who’s with me?

P.S. Apparently Dave Ramsey gave the book another shout out on the show the other day with a caller, so if you’re coming from TDR, here’s a couple quick links for you.

Giveaway & Review: New Veggie Tales DVD “The Penniless Princess”

08.01.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

The first time I saw a Veggie Tales movie I was helping in a 3 year old Sunday School class. I didn’t even have my own children, but confess to being totally drawn in. I couldn’t hear the term “boogie man” without breaking into song….”God is bigger than the boogie man…”

I bought my first Veggie Tales DVD before Noah was even born. I vividly remember picking up a one-year-old Noah and “tango-ing” around the family room to the silly song “Barbara Manatee” from “King George & the Ducky” (still my all-time favorite VT story).

So when I was asked to review their brand new story “The Penniless Princess,” of course I said yes. And best of all I get to giveaway a copy to one of YOU!

About the Movie

Sweet Sara Crewe has everything a little girl could want – a loving family, lots of friends and a closet full of frilly dresses! But when life takes a turn and Sara goes from riches to rags, will she realize that her true worth lies not in what she has, but what’s in her heart? Find out in this inspiring new story from VeggieTales, based on the beloved classic story of “A Little Princess” that reminds kids who they are in God’s eyes by Frances Hodgson Burnett, that has countless movie and book adaptations.

Sara’s dad enrolls her in a girl’s school in London before he is shipped overseas with the military. The grouchy headmistress is told to provide Sara with everything she needs – he’ll pay the bills no matter what. The headmistress takes an immediate dislike to Sara because she fraternizes with the servant girl Becky and is, GASP, kind to everyone.

When Sara’s father is killed and his fortune lost, Sara becomes a servant at the school. Determined to still show love to everyone, she and Becky endure their trials and mistreatment (lack of food, hard work), knowing their worth comes from the fact that they are God’s princesses.

Of course there’s a happy ending. Her father’s best friend, who was able to restore her inheritance, finally finds Sara and promises to care for her forever. (And grumpy headmistress is given the boot, Becky gets to go to school, etc.)

The songs are great – loved the Silly Song with two teen girls texting each other – and the 40-minute movie is quite moving.

The main message of finding our true value in our worth as part of God’s family was well emphasized. But the secondary message of showing love to everyone, no matter what, was just as valuable.

For adoptive parents – you know your children best. If Sara’s orphaning and subsequent mistreatment (not much food, dungy attic living quarters, grumpy headmistress) is going to be a trigger for your adoptive child, then you may want to hold the movie until a different time. My kids did fine with it and I think it was a great message especially for 11-year-old (going on 14) Beza.

The official trailer is posted below the giveaway details.
