Summer bucket list road trip

07.07.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

57 hours.

That’s how long we spent driving from Phoenix to Denver to Lawerence, KS to Siloam Springs, AR to Beebe, AR and back to Phoenix.

Road Trip 2012 and it was pretty awesome. A week in Denver with my brother’s family, a couple days with my Aunt and Uncle. A couple days with Mark’s Aunt, Uncle & Cousins in NW Arkansas and then a few days with the cousins in Beebe.

We checked quite a few things off the summer bucket list: go whitewater rafting, hike a glacier, see Garden of the Gods, get a behind the scenes tour of the Colorado State Capitol, swim in a lake, ride a motorcycle, catch (or try to) fireflies and see LOTS of family.

The kids (at 9, 11, 12 & 13) do GREAT in the car. They just plug in to a DVD player or their game players and we hear nary a peep out of them. Mark does the majority of the driving and I’m either reading or playing games or watching videos in the iPad.

Where are you going this summer?

Review: “Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting my Daughter”

06.24.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

Author Jennifer Grant tells the story of adopting her Guatemalan-born daughter Mia, in this book from Thomas Nelson publishing.

Grant spends quite a bit of time talking about their family life before Mia. She jumps back and forth a bit between their pre-kids life and accounts of the birth of her 3 children and one miscarriage. It was a bit confusing at times and seemed disjointed.

The parts of the book that were specific to their adoption – how they arrived at the decision, the process, the waiting – all the way through to today when Mia is 8, reads quite well.

Grant did a great job of capturing how frustrating the waiting process can be and the panic that can ensue when there are rumors of shut downs.

From time to time the book seemed to wander into stories that didn’t seemed like filler content. I found myself skimming through some of those sections, a little impatient with them.

I was glad that the book went into detail about how family life was after adopting Maria and the struggles Grant went through wondering if she was a good enough mom. Don’t we all do that?

I wouldn’t add it to my “must reads” for adoptive parents, but many would enjoy it.

Mom’s Summer Schedule Plan

06.13.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

Once May hit the kids were already asking “Are we doing the summer schedule thing again?”

In a very whiny voice.

To which I answered a resounding “YES!”

I’ve had several friends ask about it so I’m copying it again below. We’ve tweaked it a bit from last year.

The first week Luke asked if he could do a particular activity during the quiet time after lunch.

“Yes. As long as it’s quiet and you’re NOT doing it in here.”

To which he said, “Soooooo, the summer schedule is REALLY for you and dad.”

BINGO!

7:30-8:30 Breakfast (including clean up), Bible reading/journaling, get dressed
8:30 – 10:00 Free Play (outdoors while cool); possible outside chores
10:00 Snack
10:00 – 10:30 Bible Memorization
10:30 – 11:30 Electronics time available
11:30 – 12:30 Lunch/Clean Up/Free Play
12:30 – 1:30 QUIET ACTIVITIES – Read/Write/Draw
1:30 – 2:30 Remainder of electronic time; free play if its gone
2:30 – 4:30 Free Play
4:30 – 5:00 Clean-up, chores, help with dinner
