Debt Free Adoption

01.20.2008 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

For those of you that know us personally you know much of this story. For those that don’t, I must start by telling you a little bit about our family’s money philosophy. About 7 years ago my husband started listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio and bringing home tidbits of his advice. Dave Ramsey is a talk radio host and financial expert (and also a Christian) who believes in a debt-free lifestyle. His motto, or one of them, is “Live like no one else so later you can LIVE like no one else.” We attended one of his one-day events which led us to beginning his Financial Peace University class at our church about 6 years ago (still going strong).

We paid off all our debt except for our house within about 2 years – credit cards, student loans, cars (sold one of them). Then just a few months ago, in November ’07 we reached our major goal of paying off our home. We are 100% debt free.

And then God led us to adoption, which is not an inexpensive endeavor. We have savings that will pay for part of it but we do not have all that we need. I began to say “Well, if we have to go into debt to do it, then we will and we’ll pay it off as quick as we can.”

Yet once again God used Dave Ramsey to speak incredible truth into our lives. Last week I was visiting a friend in Pittsburgh. It was late one evening and I was flipping channels when I discovered that the new Dave Ramsey television show was on the Fox Business Chanel. (We don’t get it at home.) I was all excited to see what it was about.

Dave was taking calls from different people. A man called in and explained that he felt God calling him to a career change that meant going back to school and thus, in this man’s eyes, incurring debt. I forget what his actual question was but I will never forget the words that came out of Dave’s mouth. It might not be verbatim but the gist of it was, “If you truly feel like God is calling you to this then I believe that you need to look at creative ways for you to finance your schooling. There is not ONE example in the Bible of God calling someone to do something and then using debt as a tool to accomplish it!”

I think my jaw actually dropped into my lap. How little faith I have had. Sure, I know that God will provide the means but I just assumed some type of loan would be part of that. How could I short change his power by thinking so small?

When I told Mark what I had heard he pretty much said “Well, I’ve been thinking the same thing but I was afraid you’d be upset if I told you.” And he’s probably right 🙂

So a debt-free adoption it is! I’m not sure how it will happen but I am totally stoked to see the amazing ways that God will help us earn/find the funds.

Update: It’s been two years since I first wrote this post and because it’s still visited frequently, I felt like I should add an update to it. We brought home our two kids on December 27, 2008, just 11 months after this post was written. And we did it all debt free! It wasn’t easy.

In fact what my original post didn’t mention is that right around this time, my husband left his full time job with our church because of God’s leading. We had no idea what God had in store for him but felt 100% sure that he was telling us it was time to go. At the time I was only working part time but God, in his perfect timing, provided a full time job and benefits for me….at less than half of my husbands income. Yet we remained convinced of our debt free path.

I really can’t explain how it happened. No huge checks arrived in the mail from anonymous donors. The couple of grants we applied for we didn’t get. I do know that I had freelance work (web and print design) coming in at a steady pace. My freelance work has always just been an “as it appears” kind of thing. I don’t go advertise or hunt down jobs, I just take the ones that come to me through word of mouth. Well they kept coming and coming and coming. Some big, some small but a steady stream.

We cut back our budget even more which freed up a few hundred dollars every month.

Miraculously, every time a check needed to be written, the money was there. God was faithful, as he always is!

Songs for the Broken

08.30.2007 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

I thought I would share my list of songs that have helped me through these times of discouragement and darkness. Some are new and so technically I didn’t listen to them in the midst of my depression, but they still speak to me.

While you may not be suffering from depression, everyone goes through a down period at some point in your life. Maybe these songs will be able to minister to you as well.

No One Else Knows by Building 429 (Lyrics) (Video)
The Real Me by Natalie Grant (Lyrics) (Video)
Praise You In This Storm by Casting Crowns (Lyrics) (Video)
Everlasting God by Lincoln Brewster (Lyrics)  (Video)
You Carried Me by Building 429 (Lyrics) (Video)
When the Tears Fall by Newsboys (Lyrics) (Video)
Psalm 73 (My God’s Enough) by Barlow Girls (Lyrics) (Video)
Amazed by Building 429 (Lyrics)

If you have other songs that you think should be on hear, leave a comment. I’d love to hear them.

Climbing out of the Well

08.29.2007 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

Well
Last week hubby was talking with me and one of the ladies in our church who is a counselor, in preparation for last week’s message on depression – getting ideas, etc.

Meloney used this awesome illustration of "The Well". She said that some people are so far down in the well that they cannot see the light, they cannot imagine a way out and they have no hope. Those people need medication to help them begin to come up out of the well – to begin to see the light before other methods of treatment for depression will begin to work.

That was me. I honestly don’t think that I could have pulled out of the depression without medication. I know there is some controversy in Christian circles about medication for mental issues (don’t even get me started on Tom Cruise), but I don’t see how it’s any different than someone suffering from cancer. God has gifted individuals with skills to make amazing medical advancements. Who are we not to use every tool provided?

Along with the medication my doctor told me to start seeing a counselor which I did for a period of about 6 months. I did a lot of journaling during that time, a lot of examining of all the things going on in my life and I really did re-prioritize a lot of stuff.

A couple of other things that I either used at the time or have learned since then that help (besides prayer):

1. Exercise – I am bad about staying disciplined in this area but when I exercise regularly I feel so much better about myself, my energy level is up and research has shown a direct link between exercise and depression. It raises the seratonin levels in the brain which is what anti-depressants do as well.

2. Get Involved/Stay Involved – For me, I was already involved in other things when the depression hit. I was a church nursery coordinator, we hosted a home team, etc. My natural tendency was to pull back and withdraw from those things. But it was the times where I was doing something for someone else (especially the nursery) that I would forget about myself and the issues I was dealing with. So if you’re not involved in helping other people somehow, do it.

This is not to be confused with doing too much. I also pulled out of some less important things.

3. Journal – Specifically I did a lot of journaling about things I had to be grateful for – even small things. When I was worn out and overwhelmed with doing the umpteenth load of laundry I would stop and say "God, thank you for providing nice clothes for my family…and a washing machine and dryer."

4. Talk About It – Reach out to those around you and let them know what is going on in your life. Your true friends will not judge you or turn their back on you. They may not know exactly what to do or what to say but just having people around you that can help carry the burden is a huge thing.

5. Worship Music – Music has always been a big part of my life and I love finding a song that I really connect with. There are so many great praise and worship songs out there. Tomorrow I’ll post a list of songs that have especially spoken to me.

If you’ve gone through depression and have other things that helped you, please share them.

Financial Freedom

Taking Advantage of The Housing Boom

The next huge step in our financial journey really came in 2004 when the housing market in Phoenix went absolutely crazy. The house that we bought for $199,900 over a year earlier was suddenly worth about $350,000. Crazy right? So of course Mark starts talking about selling and I start rolling my eyes at him. […]

I Met Dave!

We interrupt our normally scheduled post for this breaking news… I met Dave! Yesterday I got the opportunity to volunteer at the Dave Ramsey Live Event in Phoenix. It was this same event 10 years ago that changed our lives. Before the show Dave came around and greeted every one of the 60 or so […]
