Understanding the 3 Types of Adoption Grants

07.12.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

Adoption grants are basically “free” money for your adoption. But free doesn’t mean they come without work. You just THOUGHT you were done with all that adoption paperwork.

The first key is to understand the types of grants that are available to adoptive families: direct, fundraising and matching.

Direct grants are the most desired, but also the most difficult to get. Direct grant organizations, like Show Hope, review applicants and award money outright. The money is never paid directly to families, but is paid to your adoption agency or attorney.

Of course these grants are very sought after and have limited funding based on their own fundraising. Other examples include Gift of Adoption and A Child Waits.

Fundraising grants give you an account with a non-profit grant organization to which people can donate. This provides your friends and family with the added benefit of a tax deduction when they give to your adoption fund.

These are the easiest grants to qualify for since the grant organization is not giving you money out of their pocket. I tell every adoptive family that they need to apply for these types of grants. It’s a no-brainer.

I guarantee at least a few people are going to want to donate toward your adoption, why not give them the tax break as well?

It is common for fundraising grant organizations to charge a small administrative. Ten percent seems to be the norm. Like direct grants, the money goes to your agency, not you.

Examples include Lifesong for Orphans and His Kids Too!

Matching grants are basically a combination of direct and fundraising. The grant organization allows you to fundraise and provide the tax benefit to your donors. Then they match a certain dollar amount of donations received.

They will often provide you with sample fundraising letters, or you can find some on other parents blogs. Lifesong for Orphans is one matching grant organization.

You may dread the thought of more paperwork. Or like me, you might think that your family makes too much money to qualify.

Sadly, I wish I had spent more time and applied for more grants. I was quite lackadaisical about it. We did have a fundraising grant and I applied for one direct grant which we did not receive.

The beauty of the application process is that most organizations want the same information. So gather it up, grab a cup of coffee and your computer and you can apply for multiple grants without too much additional work.

What grants have you applied for? What money have you received?

Great garage sale tip from a reader

05.18.2012 by juliegumm@yahoo.com //

I LOVE getting emails from my readers and other adoptive families who take the time to share what’s worked for them.

This morning I got an email from Dave & Amy who are doing an interstate adoption of a baby girl that is due toward the end of June.

A year ago they netted over $2,000 from a garage sale. They’re getting ready to do another one, hoping to surpass that amount, to cover their travel expenses and post-placement fees.

They’ve been sharing with friends and family and receiving donations and created a Facebook event to help spread the word.

But this is something I hadn’t thought of – I’ll just copy part of Dave’s email.

I happended to be looking on Craigslist at some of the rummage sales and thought to myself, I wonder what these people are doing with the left over items from their sale?  I know last year we had a ton of stuff at our sale and even when we were done we still had a bunch left over.  We knew someone else having a sale so we just donated the items to their sale.
So my curiosity sprung me into action!  I created a standard email talking about our adoption situation and that we were having a sale and hoping to raise funds.  I started emailing each Craigslist sale posting link for last weekend asking if people would consider donating what they had left to our sale if they were just going to take it to Goodwill anyway.  I sent so many emails that Craigslist sent me a message saying they received too many emails from my email account!!  I think that was at like 50 emails.  I don’t quit easily, so I opened my old email account that I don’t use anymore, but is still active and started emailing from there to the rest of the sales.  I found out that we sure had a lot of sales in our area as I emailed about 95 different postings!!
I wasn’t sure what the response would be like, but to date I’ve probably heard from about 10 of those people who did donate their stuff to our sale.  Granted some might say, “Well this stuff didn’t sell at their sale, so why would it sell at ous?”  I don’t know that I have a great answer for this or if it will even be effective, but I do plan there to be a lot more people at our sale than any other sale in town the weekend we do it!  We have WAY more stuff than we did last year and stuff of great value too.

GENIUS! I know when we have a garage sale I’d be thrilled to have someone come get my leftovers.

If you have any other garage sale tips, post them in the comments.

Financial Freedom

Taking Advantage of The Housing Boom

The next huge step in our financial journey really came in 2004 when the housing market in Phoenix went absolutely crazy. The house that we bought for $199,900 over a year earlier was suddenly worth about $350,000. Crazy right? So of course Mark starts talking about selling and I start rolling my eyes at him. […]

I Met Dave!

We interrupt our normally scheduled post for this breaking news… I met Dave! Yesterday I got the opportunity to volunteer at the Dave Ramsey Live Event in Phoenix. It was this same event 10 years ago that changed our lives. Before the show Dave came around and greeted every one of the 60 or so […]
